You may not know her by her name but can probably would by her music. Miriam Makeba was a South African music artist and civil rights activist whose 'world music' contributed to educating and campaigning against apartheid and many other causes. Makeba is well known for 'Pata Pata' which was first recorded in 1957 and is easily considered as being an African classic. Miriam died of a heart attack in 2008 after performing at a concert in Italy, as part of a protest campaign.
